GANDER, Newfoundland - The Dec. 12, 1985, crash of the Arrow Air charter flight at Gander remains the worst air tragedy in the history of Canada and the United States military.

Two other crashes stand out in Gander's history.

On Sept. 5, 1967, a Czechoslovakia State Airlines plane crashed on take-off from Gander. The plane's right wing hit a wire on a radar reflector mast, causing the plane to go down and break into several pieces, according to Gander aviation historian Frank Tibbo.

The plane caught fire and burned for about six hours.

There was 69 passengers and crew on board. Of those, 35 died.

The other notable crash occurred on Sept. 18, 1946, when a Sabena flight crashed on approached to Gander in heavy turbulence. Twenty-six passengers and crew members were killed in the crash. Eighteen other passengers survived.

The plane, a DC-4, had departed Belgium and was on its way to New York.
