Forces capture subcommanders
WASHINGTON – Afghan and international forces captured two suspected enemy subcommanders and seized caches of weapons and drugs in recent operations in Afghanistan, military officials reported.
An Afghan-international force captured a Haqqani terrorist network subcommander responsible for coordinating attacks on Afghan and coalition forces during a combined operation in the Sabari district of Afghanistan’s Khost province. The captured subcommander also is accused of arranging delivery of weapons to other Haqqani network operatives. The combined force also detained a pair of other suspected insurgents.
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and international security force detained several suspected militants in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province during two operations Monday.
During the first operation, the combined force searched a vehicle after intelligence information indicated militant activity, and detained several people for further questioning.
In the second operation, a combined force searched a vehicle and detained a man.
Joint forces target explosives operator
KABUL, Afghanistan – Two insurgents, including a senior explosives operator, were killed during an operation conducted by a combined Afghanistan and international security force near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early Monday, military officials reported Wednesday.
The combined force went to an area in Afghanistan’s Helmand province where the insurgents had collected a large amount of fertilizer containing ammonium nitrate, a key ingredient used to create homemade bombs. The material was placed on a truck and driven north toward central Helmand.
Afghan forces recover drugs from vehicle
HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan soldiers confiscated heroin and opium from a vehicle trying to bypass a checkpoint in Afghanistan’s Helmand province Tuesday, military officials reported.
When Afghan soldiers tried to detain the driver, he accelerated the vehicle, dragging a soldier along. Fellow soldiers fired warning shots and attempted to fire vehicle-disabling shots. When that didn’t work, the soldiers fired lethal shots into the vehicle wounding the driver, who later died.
